Physics Block and Stepwell at the Former British Residency (Hyderabad, Telangana)
The British Residency at Hyderabad, the residence to successive British residents, was far more than a residence—it served as a pivotal center of British political power and administration of the British government in India. Today, this historic site has been transformed into the Veeranari Chakali Ilamma Women’s University (VCIWU), a vibrant hub of women’s education.
Among the many structures within the Residency complex, the Physics Block holds unique historical and academic significance. Originally serving as civil offices, these buildings were later adapted—with several unplanned modifications—into classrooms and laboratories to support the university’s growing academic needs. Unfortunately, poor maintenance and insensitive repairs over the years left the structure in a vulnerable state.
Along the Physics Block is a stepwell which stands out as uniquely structured like a “well within a well.” Once vital for drinking water, irrigation, and daily use, it is a remarkable example of traditional water management in a historic urban setting.
With generous support from ADVA Enviro Solutions Pvt. Ltd. (The Rainwater Project), the Deccan Heritage Foundation India has initiated the Restoration of the Physics Block (partial) and the stepwell at VCIWU.The restoration of the building will primarily focus on improving waterproofing by laying new terraces. The work will include the consolidation and partial reconstruction of walls that have been compromised due to vegetation intrusion. A section of the roof will also be reconstructed due to water ingress, root intrusion and deterioration of the jack arch structure.
For the stepwell restoration, excavation will be carried out to expose the original layers, ensuring the structural stability of the well. The process will also involve the removal of large trees and vegetation that have taken root within the stepwell.
PROJECT IMPACT
Educational Enhancement: The restored Physics Block will provide safe and secure academic spaces, supporting learning and research activities at the university.
Water Resilience: The rejuvenated stepwell will contribute to meeting the water requirements of the campus and its gardens, promoting sustainable use and reviving traditional systems.
Catalyst for Broader Restoration: Successful completion of this phase enables Phase-II restoration works in the East and West wings of the Residency complex.
Heritage Conservation: The project ensures the preservation of architectural heritage, reinforcing the importance of adaptive reuse in heritage conservation.
